Death of Vanderbilt board member and children's hospital namesake


Monroe J. Carell Jr. died last Friday after his battle with cancer, according to a Vanderbilt News Service press release. In recognition of his business and philanthropic contributions to the Nashville community, a public memorial service was held Sunday afternoon, following a time of visitation with the family at the Fleming Center at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. A private mass for the family was held at St. Cecilia Chapel, with the burial at Calvary Cemetery.


Over the years, Carell served as the chairman and chief executive officer of Central Parking Corp., was a member of Vanderbilt's Board of Trust since 1991 and also served on the Vanderbilt Medical Center Board and Board of Overseers for the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. He was also an honorary lifetime member of the Board of Directors for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital.
