Vanderbilt came into Saturday needing a two-game sweep of Ole Miss to reach the SEC Tournament final and try to repeat as champions.
Vanderbilt did what it had to in the first game, beating Ole Miss 7-4.
A late rally in the second game got the Commodores to the doorstep of the championship game but they came up just short, losing 8-7.
After falling behind 8-3, Vanderbilt scored three runs in the eighth inning and got within one on a long home run by Pedro Alvarez in the ninth. However, Ryan Flaherty was stranded on first when the final two batters struck out.
Flaherty also homered in the first inning, a two-run shot.
Vanderbilt finishes the regular season 40-20, while the Rebels became the first No. 8 seed in the tournament to ever reach the finals. They play the LSU Tigers, who have not lost in over a month, Sunday for the championship.
